NOMOS is celebrating 175 years of Glashütte watchmaking with 31 new delectable colours for its Tangente 38 Datum collection where there’s surely something for everyone or every occasion. Discover the rest of our Watches and Wonder 2024 coverage.

The celebration of German watchmaking, specifically 175 years in the Glashütte region, continues strong at NOMOS. After unveiling several enviable celebratory editions of some of its classic collections, such as the NOMOS Tetra Neomatik and Ludwig, the brand took the opportunity at Watches & Wonders 2024 to showcase 31 new dial colour combinations for its Tangente 38 Datum lineup as a homage to Glashütte’s cultural milestone.

Colourways aside, the new watches remain essentially Tangente 38 Datum at its core. They’re fitted with a 37.5mm stainless steel case boasting thin, elongated lugs and a dial encompassing the usual layout: a seconds subdial at 6 o’clock and a large date window just below it. The finishing aesthetic touch is the large typeface in the brand’s signature Bauhaus-inspired style.

The new Tangente 38 Datum – 175 Years Watchmaking Glashütte collection retains the beating heart of the in-house movement DUW 4101 with a 42-hour power reserve. It is hand-wound, regulated to chronometer standards, and equipped with the NOMOS swing system. Each model is limited to 175 units and engraved with a unique serial number and a clear view of the movement that can be found on its sapphire caseback.

Rather than opting for one shade or two – though there are some safe options – NOMOS has taken the fun liberty of matching three shades for each segment of the dial. They are irresistible but then again, NOMOS has never been shy with colours. All 31 range far and wide on a palette: from the almost translucent-white Tangente 38 Datum Schulhausweiß with a sand-coloured sub-seconds dial to an intense, fiery-red Tangente 38 Datum Chili paired with equally bold shades of red.

Some colour combinations sound utterly delicious, such as the Tangente 38 Datum Lakritze takes after liquorice candy or the Tangente 38 Datum Go in the palette of fresh green tomatoes. Some take a more poetic inspiration, like the off-black dial on the Tangente 38 Datum Tiefseegrau that conjures the illusion of the deep sea and the accented pink minute track to represent clearly seeing those creatures that lurk at those depths when one dares to dive under.

In the midst of finding inspiration for these unique colour combinations, NOMOS also had a closer look at home. The Tangente 38 Datum Sportbunt referenced the sunburnt orange, blue and yellow off of the vintage GDR tracksuit that in-house Thomas habitually wore. The Tangente 38 Datum Lemonbiscuit approved the good taste of a NOMOS watchmaker’s uncle who loved the tangy, creamy yellow biscuit for his afternoon snacks. Incidentally, the uncle was also a watchmaker.

As many fun colourways as there are in this Tangente 38 Datum series – be it the flamingo pinks with matte white or the rich mauve with violet-green, the watches remain gender-neutral and invite all to experiment with individuality as well as play with watch-collecting.
