LVMH Watch Week 2025: Gérald Genta Unveils the Gentissima Oursin Fire Opal
22 Jan 2025 · 4 min read

The House of Gérald Genta has once again captured the essence of beauty and innovation in its latest creation, the Gentissima Oursin Fire Opal. Building upon a legacy of audacious design and exquisite craftsmanship, this release reimagines the interplay between nature’s artistry and modern watchmaking. This extends on the existing collection of Gentissima Oursin watches, which includes a black, grey, and pink variation that utilised DLC-coated grade 5 titanium to great degree.

At its heart lies the inspiration drawn from the vibrant hues of the fire opal. This gemstone, forged in the depths of Mexico’s volcanic landscapes, serves as both a focal point and a narrative device. With colours ranging from golden yellow to fiery red, the fire opal is a testament to Earth’s raw power and creativity. It resonates with the brand's ethos, symbolising heightened creativity and confidence—qualities that Gérald Genta’s designs have long embodied.

A Tribute to Timeless Vision

The origins of the Oursin line trace back to Corsica in 1994, where a simple sea urchin captivated Gérald Genta’s imagination. Its geometric symmetry inspired the initial sketches that would eventually define the collection. 30 years later, this legacy thrives with the Gentissima Oursin Fire Opal reflecting an evolution of the original concept.

The piece, enriched by 137 individually set fire opals around its yellow-gold case, highlights an uncompromising dedication to detail. Artistic director Matthieu Hegi described this creation as a "sublimation of the unexpected into art," emphasising the fusion of rare materials and intuitive design. The fire opal’s organic colours complement the watch’s cornelian dial, ensuring every angle reveals a new facet of its personality.

In addition to its aesthetic appeal, the Fire Opal exemplifies precision engineering. Housed within a 36 mm yellow-gold case, the watch is powered by the GG-005 Zenith Elite calibre. This movement is notable for its redesigned oscillating mass and 50-hour power reserve, underscoring Gérald Genta's commitment to blending artistry with technical prowess.

The piece also features a carefully crafted orange cornelian dial accented with yellow-gold markers. Its tactile, glass-blasted finish enhances the brilliance of the opals, harmonising texture with visual splendour. The case of the Gentissima Oursin Fire Opal is made of 3N yellow-gold to give it a warm glow.

The Oursin was among Gérald’s few creations that he was proudest of; he actually almost didn’t want to sell them and produced only very few for very close friends and clients. Seeing the new Oursin Fire Opal reminds me so much of Gérald, how much he loved adorning stones on his watches and looking at them through various light sources. The multiple ways a stone catches light was for him an endless source of fascination and its own definition of beauty.

The Gentissima Oursin Fire Opal is a profound homage to the philosophies of its originator, seamlessly bridging the past and the present. By celebrating the artistry of rare materials and a heritage of innovative design, this piece ensures Gérald Genta’s vision continues to inspire generations to come.
