Ulysse Nardin’s New Diver Watches Embrace Innovation
24 Sep 2024 · 4 min read

Ulysse Nardin has long had a stranglehold on the ocean and aquatic life. The marine world has always been at the forefront of its fundamental mission, constantly raising awareness about sustainability and environmental responsibility. Ulysse Nardin has introduced two new watches to the fold to further expand on its journey: the Diver Net OPS and the Diver X Skeleton OPS.

This comes after the launch of two Freak OPS in 2023, as the two new additions would add some edge to the brand's existing 'OPS' capsule collection. This adds an adventurous twist to the Diver lineage and celebrates the indomitable in-house watchmaking the Manufacturer is known for. Both watches will have a distinctly different look and feel, which allows you to fully appreciate the finer details that went into creating them.

DIVER NET OPS

The Ulysse Nardin Diver Net OPS is what the Manufacture considers a 'high-performance' watch due to being the most sustainable sports watch in the market. Its case is made of 95% recycled stainless steel alongside a combination of breakthrough materials, which Ulysse Nardin has been pioneering. The sides, as well as the case back of the watch, are made of two different materials: 60% is made up of Nylo, and the other 40% is made of Carbonium.

Nylo comes from upcycled fishing nets, while Carbonium is made from the same carbon fibres found in state-of-the-art aircraft wings and fuselages. This pioneering material has exceptional strength-to-lightness properties, which was created using offcuts from the aircraft manufacturing process, reducing its environmental impact by 40% compared to other carbon composites. Because of the use of Carbonium, it provides a marbling effect to the unidirectional rotating bezel.

The Diver Net OPS features a sand-blasted textured khahi green dial with a power reserve, date window, and seconds sub-dial

At the heart of the Diver Net OPS lies the automatic UN-118 calibre movement that comes with a 60-hour power reserve alongside a balance spring made of silicone. Both the escapement wheel and anchor are coated in DiamondSil, a patented, ultra-high-tech form of diamond-coated silicone that is capable of delivering exceptional durability and precision. This is what powers the hour, minute, and seconds hand along with the date window and the power reserve indicator.

All this can be found on the dial of the watch, which was sandblasted in a khaki green shade to go with its embossed and satin-finished 'X'. The power reserve can be located at 12 o'clock on the watch while its date window and small seconds sub-dial can be found at 6 o'clock. Legibility isn't an issue with the Diver Net OPS as its rhodium-finished indices and hands are covered in beige Super-LumiNova.

DIVER X SKELETON OPS

As for the Ulysse Nardin Diver X Skeleton OPS, it is an avant-garde retelling of a diving watch while also being so much more. Carbonium plays a big part in the watch as it can be found not only on the unidirectional rotating bezel, but also on the barrel cover at 12 o'clock. However, that's not all as Ulysse Nardin has incorporated lightweight titanium on its sleek case and topped off with black DLC coating, which has been sandblasted and satin finished.

All this is to further accentuate the aesthetics of the watch, which is backed by the automatic skeleton UN-372 movement. It features the same anchor and balance spring made of silicone to go with an oversized oscillator and an escapement wheel. You can view the movement from either the dial or the case back of the watch, the latter of which is also made of black DLC titanium with an open sapphire case back.

Speaking of the dial, it showcases the large 'X' that has been polished and satin-finished while also being coated in black PVD. Its black indexes and hands are also coated in Super-LumiNova for greater readability. The Ulysse Nardin Diver X Skeleton OPS also features three different straps that can be used with the watch.

Aside from a khaki green fabric strap made of upcycled fishing nets, there's also a khaki green rubber strap with 'Ulysse Nardin' written in black ceramic element at 6 o'clock. Lastly, the third is a black ceramic bracelet with a black PVD titanium deployant buckle.
