Patek Philippe Cubitus: Fusing Tradition and Technical Innovation
18 Oct 2024 · 4 min read

Twenty-five years after its last collection release, Patek Philippe presents the Cubitus collection, introducing a new movement with six patented innovations.

At the centre of the Cubitus collection is the Instantaneous Grand Date, Day, and Moon Phases Ref. 5822P-001, a piece that reflects the Manufacture’s dedication to technical excellence while honouring its tradition of precision and elegance. Alongside the 5822P are two additional models—the Ref. 5821/1AR and the 5821/1A—that complete the Cubitus lineup.

Each model carries Patek Philippe’s distinctive character, with variations in case materials and dial colours. The 5822P-001 comes in a platinum case with a sunburst-blue dial, while the 5821/1AR-001 features a stainless steel and rose gold case. The 5821/1A-001 is defined by its stainless-steel case paired with an embossed sunburst olive-green dial.

Heritage and the Future of Complex Watchmaking

Patek Philippe’s ability to balance innovation with tradition is on full display in the Cubitus collection. Known for integrating advanced technology with time-honoured craftsmanship, the brand continues to push the boundaries of technical excellence. The six patents filed for the new calibre highlight Patek Philippe’s commitment to refining mechanical processes, ensuring precise instantaneous transitions, improved legibility, and ease of use. Once again, the Manufacture sets a new benchmark in watchmaking, blending modern advancements with its storied heritage.

Looking forward, the Cubitus collection embodies the future of complex watchmaking, where technical innovations do not come at the expense of the brand’s classical values. Each watch in the collection serves as both a functional watch and a work of art, carrying forward the legacy of innovation and refinement that has defined Patek Philippe for nearly two centuries.

A Nod to the Past with Modern Innovation

While the technical advancements in the Cubitus collection are forward-looking, the collection remains deeply rooted in Patek Philippe’s traditions. By building upon the calibre 240—a movement that has been in continuous use for nearly five decades—the brand honours its heritage while embracing modern innovation. This movement, which has powered iconic models like the Nautilus Ref. 5712, links the Cubitus collection to a legacy of craftsmanship and timeless design. The platinum case and blue sunburst dial of the Ref. 5822P-001 reflect Patek Philippe’s commitment to enduring beauty and technical mastery.

Technical Brilliance Meets Aesthetic Elegance

The grand date is displayed through co-planar disks, keeping the date flush with the dial—a critical detail that ensures the watch’s streamline appearance. The platinum case, with its square shape and rounded corners, adds modern appeal while offering visual interest through its polished and satin-brushed surfaces. The sapphire crystal case back reveals the calibre 240 PS CI J LU, featuring a 22K gold off-centre mini rotor. This not only highlights the ultra-thin movement but also showcases the craftsmanship behind Patek Philippe’s design.

A Movement of Innovation: Calibre 240 PS CI J LU

At its core, the calibre 240 PS CI J LU stands as a testament to Patek Philippe's philosophy of delivering technical sophistication without sacrificing aesthetic or practical concerns. Despite its complexity, which adds 104 parts to the original base movement, the calibre remains remarkably slim, with an increase of only 0.77 mm in height. The movement features several complications, including grand date in a double aperture, moon phases, and day of the week, all designed to jump instantaneously at midnight in a synchronized display.

Patek Philippe's patented systems ensure these transitions occur seamlessly within 18 milliseconds, underscoring the brand’s dedication to precision in both mechanics and aesthetics. Each function, from the dual co-axial day and moon-phase display to the large date mechanism with coplanar disks, is engineered for practicality and durability, traits deeply ingrained in the brand’s watchmaking heritage.
