Sinn Takes Flight with the Pilot 104 Commemorative Edition
23 Sep 2024 · 4 min read

Sinn is well-renowned for its aviation watches and it has just released its latest piece, the Pilot 104 Commemorative Edition. This was created in conjunction with the Watches of Switzerland 60th anniversary alongside The Hour Glass, one of the world’s leading specialist watch retailers with over 60 boutiques across 14 cities around Asia-Pacific.

The Pilot 104 Commemorative Edition will be the latest addition to the series and only the brand's third collaboration during its time.

Sinn has already collaborated with two other brands during its lifetime: the Löwen Frankfurt ice hockey team and Juwelier am Schloss, a German jewellery store. In conjunction with Watches of Switzerland, Sinn has introduced a brand-new colourway to the Pilot 104, which will now feature two different shades of blue that are both bright and dark on the watch.

Although Sinn as a brand has introduced various watches in shades of blue, its Commemorative Edition alongside Watches of Switzerland features a new swatch. This is evident from the strap to the case, bezel, and all the way down to the dial of the Piot 104. It features a blue gradient hue that looks lighter at the centre of the dial and it gets darker as it goes towards the edges.

This is down to the Pilot 104 Commemorative Edition taking the same visual cues as its predecessors. The indices alongside its hour, minute, and seconds hands are offset with a luminescent colour for greater readability. Much like its other models, the Pilot 104 Commemorative Edition will also a day and date window on the dial of the watch at 3 o'clock.

Protecting the dial is a polished stainless-steel case that comes equipped with a sapphire crystal glass. It features an anti-reflective coating on both sides of the glass to ensure clear readability at all times of the day. When you turn the watch over, you'll be greeted with a transparent case back that's also made of sapphire crystal. But it's only the interior glass of the case back that has an anti-reflective coating to give you a closer look at the mechanics that power the Pilot 104.

PILOTING THE 104

At the heart of the Sinn Pilot 104 St Sa | WOS is the Sellita SW220-1 mechanical movement, coupled with a self-winding mechanism. To ensure it isn't affected by magnetism, the movement is anti-magnetic as per the DIN 8309 rating. It also features a seconds stop function to allow for easier manual winding down to the second if necessary.

The Pilot 104 is also waterproof thanks to its screw-fastened case back with a screwable crown to ensure it meets all the technical requirements needed to be waterproof. This is set out at the standard DIN8310 criteria rating, which will give the Pilot 104 a water-and pressure-resistant level of 20ATM while also being low-pressure resistant in the process.

But what sets the Pilot 104 Commemorative Edition apart from the other watches in the collection is the rotating captive bezel. It utilises ball bearings instead of a spring to ensure the safety of the bezel, which is screwed down into the case instead of being a friction fit. This allows the bezel to be more secure than ever.

It also features minute ratcheting while also being draped in a slightly darker shade of blue. With a 60-minute countdown on the top layer of the bezel, it is adorned with a bright red "60" at 12 o'clock to mark the 60th anniversary for Watches of Switzerland. The Sinn Pilot 104 will come in a fine case alongside a light-blue cowhide strap with alligator embossing to give it an air of elegance and flair.
