Ressence introduced the TYPE 3 BB2 a little over a month ago, just days before the start of Geneva Watch Days. Seen as the successor to the TYPE 3 BBB and the brand's other TYPE 3s, Ressence has since unveiled its latest offering where contrasts meet harmony. In true monochromatic fashion, the TYPE 3 Black and White are essentially the 'yin' and 'yang' of Ressence and its TYPE 3 series of watches.

Since its inception, the Belgian-based watchmaker founded in 2010 by Benoît Mintiens has been on the rise within the industry due to its patented time display system. The TYPE 3 series of watches was introduced in 2013 and utilised oil in a new and creative way to showcase the time. Being one of the first of its kind during that time, Ressence has since built upon the foundations of the TYPE 3 with newer technologies and materials.

The Ressence TYPE 3 won the prestigious “Horological Revelation” award at the 2013 Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève while the TYPE 3 BB2 took home the Red Dot Design award earlier this year. With its unique design earning plaudits 11 years apart, it goes to show just how well Ressence has been reciprocated by the community. For the new TYPE 3 Black and White, Ressence brings new details to the forefront to ensure its latest dial designs are aligned with the rest of the TYPE 3 collection.

The brand's in-house font was not finalised when the TYPE 3 launched in 2013; this came two years later with the launch of the TYPE 5. For the new TYPE 3 Black and White, they will now feature a custom typeface for technical precision. The numbers and indexes of the watch now have distinctively rounded edges while the weekend days and oil temperature indicators sport new pastel tones.

Its design ensures exceptional readability from any angle, thanks to the usage of oil on its pebble-like form. 3.57 ml of oil floods the upper chamber of the watch to project the illusion of information directly displayed on the sapphire glass, which evokes a sense of it being a digital display screen. The engraved indexes are also coated in Grade A Super-LumiNova for greater readability, regardless of its lighting conditions.

Housed at the heart of the Ressence Type 3 Black and White is the patented Ressence Orbital Convex System (ROSC) 3.6 module, which is driven by the minute axle of a customised automatic base calibre. This is held in the upper half of the watch, which encompasses two separately sealed chambers. Both the upper- and lower-half of the watch carries double-domed sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective coating on the inner concave.

As the case is made of grade 5 titanium, the dial features the same material that has been DLC-coated. Given that the design of the Ressence TYPE 3 doesn't feature a crown, wearers use the case back to wind not only the time, but also adjust the day and date setting of the watch.

The watch also features a state-of-the-art bellows system, a self-equilibrating pressure-balance system that was specially designed to extend or compress. This allows the bellows system to compensate for changes in the oil’s internal temperature situations, which can range from -5 degrees to +55 degrees Celsius. As for its advanced micro magnetic transmission, it is what helps to connect the two separately sealed chambers in the watch.

A harmonious blend between light and shadow has put the Ressence TYPE 3 Black and White on full display, giving wearers an interplay between the two watches. Both the Ressence TYPE 3 Black and White will have a dedicated strap to complement its colourway; the TYPE 3 Black comes with a black synthetic leather strap to go with a titanium ardillon buckle. For the TYPE 3 White, it will be a medium grey woven synthetic fabric with blue green lining alongside the same titanium ardillon buckle.
