Samuel Ross Visits Hublot
Location: Hublot Manufacture Nyon, Switzerland
ACW*
Samuel Ross, prominent fashion designer, former protégé of Virgil Abloh and winner of the 2019 Hublot Design Prize stopped by the Hublot Manufacture in Nyon. Ross first launched his streetwear brand A-Cold-Wall* (ACW*) in 2015 at the age of 25, aftering working with Louis Vuitton’s Creative Director, Virgil Abloh, as a creative assistant at Off-White and at Yeezy. Five years later, Ross is recognised as a streetwear icon – famous for his collaborative approach, his engagement with his supporters and his innovative approach towards using non-traditional fabrics and materials.
In his interview with Dazed, Ross said “It’s becoming more of a philosophy rather than a principle. “There are still some struggles, as you all know, in regards to trying to switch to or source more sustainable fabrics. It’s not just about recycling anymore but more about how we can reconvene and interact with materials. It’s something everyone needs to work with.”
Hublot Design Prize 2019
Last September, Samuel Ross was crowned the 2019 Hublot Design Prize winner. Now in its 6th year running, the Hublot Design Prize was created in 2015 to celebrate the ten-year anniversary of the launch of the iconic Big Bang model. The Prize was born from the on-going friendship between Jean-Claude Biver and Pierre Keller (former director of Lausanne University of Art and Design, ECAL) and aims to highlight the work of the designers of tomorrow. It is designed to launch and increase the exposure of an already accomplished designer, so that one day they will rank amongst the great names in design.
On visiting the Hublot Manufacture in Nyon, Switzerland, Ross said “The similarities between art and watchmaking, I’d say, is that there’s this idea of pushing concepts and engineering to really give an emotive take and an [generate] emotive output.”
