Watches & Wonders 2025: Grand Seiko Refines the Art of Precision
Latest Releases
03 Apr 2025 · 10 min read

Grand Seiko has presented a compelling series of novelties at Watches & Wonders 2025, which underscores the brand’s pursuit of horological innovation and its philosophy of craftsmanship rooted in nature, motion, and clarity. From Spring Drive innovations to mechanical advancements housed in modern case silhouettes, the 2025 offerings illustrate Grand Seiko’s commitment to long-term excellence and mechanical distinction.

What sets Grand Seiko apart is not simply its technical refinement, but the way in which its engineering is in constant conversation with the natural world. Each new reference introduced this year draws from the subtle yet expressive qualities of the Japanese landscape — from the serene texture of the icy forest in the Kirigamine Highlands of Shinshu, to the shifting blue tones of dusk over Mt. Iwate, and even the tranquil beauty of the purple kiri flower. These are not literal representations, but atmospheric impressions — translated into metal and dial through a highly deliberate design process rooted in observation, memory, and material tactility.

This intersection between environment and engineering is also evident in the brand’s latest movement innovation: the Spring Drive Calibre 9RB2. The movement builds on the foundational qualities of earlier Spring Drive calibres while introducing enhanced energy efficiency and a longer power reserve — now extended to approximately 72 hours. Together, the novelties presented at Watches & Wonders 2025 offer a clear vision of where Grand Seiko is heading — a direction defined not by seasonal trends, but by a quiet, continuous refinement of both design and mechanical intent.

The SBGW323 reinterprets the classic 44GS form with a soft purple dial inspired by the kiri flower of Iwate Prefecture

Part of the Heritage Collection, the SBGW323 takes a more restrained approach to timekeeping. The dial is inspired by the kiri flower — Japan’s emblematic “princess tree” — which blooms in shades of soft purple during spring in the Iwate Prefecture. Powered by the Calibre 9S64, a hand-wound mechanical movement with a 72-hour power reserve, SBGW323 reinterprets the proportions of the original 44GS from 1967 in a 36.5mm stainless steel case. The watch is fitted with a three-fold clasp, anti-reflective box-shaped sapphire crystal, and a screw-down caseback, delivering both elegance and reliability in equal measure.

The SBGD223 is powered by the eight-day Spring Drive Calibre 9R01, produced by the artisans of the Micro Artist Studio

Making up the Masterpiece Collection is the SBGD223, a watch that draws its visual and conceptual strength from Grand Seiko’s longstanding lion motif. Its jet-black dial, created using precise press patterning, evokes the image of a lion emerging from shadow, with a textured centre reminiscent of a mane. The watch showcases Grand Seiko's gem-setting expertise: over 600 diamonds and black spinels form a dazzling constellation around the dial, minute track, and Platinum 950 case, arranged using Grand Seiko’s first-ever pavé setting technique.

The Spring Drive Calibre 9RB2 with its new U.F.A designation stands for 'Ultra Fine Accuracy

At Watches & Wonders 2025, Grand Seiko marks a new chapter in its ongoing pursuit of precision with the debut of Calibre 9RB2, a next-generation Spring Drive movement distinguished by its U.F.A designation. Operating with an annual precision rate of ±20 seconds, this automatic movement is the most accurate of its kind ever produced by the brand. It achieves this standard through enhancements in quartz oscillator ageing, thermo-compensation programming, and a newly introduced regulation switch for long-term performance adjustments.

This cutting-edge calibre makes its first appearance in two refined creations for the Evolution 9 Collection: the SLGB001 and SLGB003, each drawing from the wintry stillness of the Shinshu region where all Grand Seiko Spring Drive watches are made.

SLGB001

SLGB001 brings the Calibre 9RB2 to life in an 18k platinum case at just 37 mm

Encased in Platinum 950, SLGB001 offers a slightly deeper interpretation of icy blue, its textured dial reflecting the frost-laden forests of Shinshu during midwinter. A silver-toned seconds hand glides across the surface in Grand Seiko’s signature Spring Drive motion, providing a subtle yet compelling contrast against the dial’s cool depth. This model is paired with a crocodile leather strap and underlines the brand’s ability to combine compact dimensions (37 mm case) with architectural detail.

SLGB003

Lighter in both hue and weight, SLGB003 features a softly silver-blue dial and tempered blue seconds hand, framed within a case and bracelet made of High-Intensity Titanium. About 30% lighter than stainless steel, the material enhances wearability while retaining the polished and brushed finish characteristic of the Evolution 9 Collection. The model introduces a new three-step micro-adjustment clasp, allowing precise 2 mm changes without tools — an understated but meaningful enhancement for everyday fit and comfort.

SLGC007

The design of the SLGC007 echoes the snow-covered ridgelines of Mount Itawe with subdials of a contrasting shade

The last of the latest release in the Evolution 9 Collection comes SLGC007, a mechanical chronograph inspired by Mount Iwate in winter. Its two-layered dial, rendered in a pale snow-blue tone, evokes the mountain’s freshly fallen snow, while black sub-dials serve as visual metaphors for the darker ridgelines that appear beneath the frost. At the heart of this chronograph lies the Calibre 9SC5, Grand Seiko’s high-beat 10Hz movement with a 72-hour power reserve and column wheel mechanism. The watch offers precise timekeeping while maintaining mechanical robustness, housed in high-intensity titanium with a ceramic bezel.

SLGC009

The design of the dial takes the form of a lion's mane with a grainy and textured look to go with its matching brown rubber strap—inspired by the paw of the lion

Rounding up its releases at Geneva, Grand Seiko introduces the next evolution of its lion-inspired sports series with the Tokyo Lion Tentagraph (SLGC009). Housed in Brilliant Hard Titanium for enhanced lightness and durability, this 43 mm chronograph is the first in the Sport Collection to pair Grand Seiko’s distinctive lion silhouette with the Tentagraph movement, the brand’s inaugural mechanical chronograph calibre. Beating at 10 times per second, Calibre 9SC5 delivers high-frequency precision alongside a three-day power reserve, thanks to its energy-efficient Dual Impulse Escapement and twin-barrel construction. Its layered dial evokes the windswept mane of a lion, while tall, claw-like indexes and a sculptural case profile offer clarity and distinction.

Final Thoughts

Together, Grand Seiko’s 2025 novelties reflect a deepening of its core principles — an ongoing dialogue between technical refinement, aesthetic clarity, and an enduring connection to place. From the high-performance evolution of the Tokyo Lion Tentagraph to the quiet elegance of the SBGW323 and the artistic mastery behind the SBGD223, each creation expresses a distinct facet of the brand’s identity.

Meanwhile, the unveiling of the Spring Drive Calibre 9RB2 marks a new benchmark in precision, housed within two compact references that celebrate the icy landscapes of Shinshu. Whether through high-beat chronographs, hand-wound tributes to natural motifs, or pavé-set masterpieces that merge engineering with art, Grand Seiko’s Watches & Wonders 2025 collection stands as a unified statement — one that honours tradition while continuing to shape the future of Japanese watchmaking.
