Presenting An Exhibition Of Specially-Commissioned Objet D’arts & Limited Edition Timepieces

SINGAPORE, 14 June 2019 – The Hour Glass has dedicated itself to promoting watch culture throughout the world since the opening of its first boutique in Singapore in 1979. For its 40thAnniversary, it seeks to explore new avenues to develop deeper interest in horology and enrich lives with passion.

The Mandate: Then Now Beyond

What is time? Do we all perceive it the same way?

Conventionally, the passage of time is measured on a linear scale. The amount of ‘time’ we have left is a reminder of our fleeting existence, an ever-present memento mori. Far from a commodity, time is mankind’s ultimate luxury.

By looking at time from a cyclical perspective, it provides an entirely different meaning to how we experience it. The sun rises and sets every day, the passing of each year is signalled by the changing of seasons, humans may pass but are succeeded by their children in a constant cycle of change, birth and re-birth. Time, can thus be seen as being unlimited; always refreshed and recycled.

Beyond these human perceptions, the scientific community continues to question the very existence of time itself. The past, present and the future may not be as straightforward as they seem and are posited to co-exist simultaneously. This is the fourth dimension, where time is relative.

The Vision: Advancing Watch Culture, Enriching Lives with Passion

In celebrating the passage of four decades of ‘time’, The Hour Glass has sought to challenge our relationship with the past, the present and the future by commissioning a series of objet D’arts from world-renowned contemporary artists and designers such as Daniel Arsham, nendo, Marc Newson and Studio Wieki Somers. Facilitated by leading art and design advisory The Artling, these commissioned projects were selected after a rigorous process presided over by a committee comprised of British architect Sir David Adjaye OBE, watch specialist Mr Aurel Bacs and Group Managing Director of The Hour Glass Mr Michael Tay.

In addition, The Hour Glass shall also be presenting a curated selection of Commemorative Edition wristwatches developed in tandem with our longstanding partners: Audemars Piguet, Chopard, De Bethune, Franck MullerMB&F, URWERK, Ulysse Nardin, Nomos Glashütte, SinnTAG Heuer and Longines.

The Hour Glass will be celebrating its 40th anniversary from 30th June 2019 through to 31st May 2020.
