Among this year’s highlights at Watches and Wonders, Patek Philippe introduces a remarkable watch that brings together four high complications in a single, elegantly proportioned watch. The Ref. 5308G-001 doesn’t announce itself with grandeur — instead, it invites closer inspection, revealing a layered approach to mechanical complexity that feels deliberate rather than demonstrative.

The development of this model traces back to 2011’s Ref. 5208, which combined a minute repeater, chronograph, and perpetual calendar. In this latest iteration, the chronograph evolves into a split-seconds mechanism — one of the most demanding complications to execute — now paired with a minute repeater and instantaneous perpetual calendar. More than a stacking of functions, the Ref. 5308G-001 refines the conversation around what is possible in a wrist-worn format, while maintaining clarity of purpose in each display.

The case, rendered in white gold with skeletonised lugs, measures 42mm across and is fully polished. Despite the density of components within, its profile remains balanced on the wrist. A slide for the repeater is positioned at 9 o’clock, while the pushers for the monopusher chronograph and rattrapante are subtly integrated into the caseband. The result is a design that prioritises symmetry and presence without visual weight.

Dial-side, the Ref. 5308G-001 is finished in an ice-blue sunburst tone with a quiet iridescence. Three apertures — day, date, and month — curve along the upper half of the dial, while two smaller indicators for the leap year and day/night cycle flank either side. The 60-minute and 12-hour counters are placed at 3 and 9 o’clock, with small seconds and moonphase at 6. In total, 13 indications are presented without crowding — a testament to both the layout and the soft tonal contrasts used throughout.

Inside, the calibre R CHR 27 PS QI comprises 799 components, including patented solutions that address two critical energy challenges: friction in the chronograph wheel, and the isolating of the split-seconds mechanism when not in use. These optimisations allow for high precision even when multiple complications are engaged simultaneously. Notably, a platinum off-centre microrotor is used for winding — its added mass helping to ensure efficient energy recovery. The entire movement sits just 12.28mm high, impressive given the volume of functionality it supports.

Paired with a shiny navy-blue alligator strap and secured by a new triple-blade white gold clasp, the watch offers both stability and comfort. This updated clasp design appears across several 2025 introductions and is engineered for durability, ease of use, and discreet wearability.
The Ref. 5308G-001 doesn’t seek to reinvent Patek Philippe’s approach to grand complications. Instead, it refines it—quietly but decisively. Combining a minute repeater, split-seconds chronograph, and instantaneous perpetual calendar within a 42mm white gold case, it’s a technical achievement presented without excess. The ice-blue dial offers clarity and restraint, allowing the complexity beneath to speak softly rather than shout. This is a watch for collectors who look beyond spectacle—those who value subtlety, depth, and the kind of engineering that reveals more with time.
